Insurance company do not inform me of their policy?

a very large UK insurer apparently has policy or practise to ess that if you have 3 claims over a 5 year period, then you're cancelled! 1 accident - no prosecution from it just under 5 years ago and 2 pothole damage claims. If they had told me of this I would have paid for the pothole repairs myself and then used their legal cover to chase the council for my costs. But no...they apparently don't have to tell me that that is how they do things and do not inform their customers by plonking any such info in the policy doent. Sharp practise, false contract or what?
