If unions were abolished in the US do you think companies would take advantage of workers?

In modern America I don't think unions are still relevant. My impression of unions is that they serve to drive up costs and decrease efficiency. But do you think American industry might revert to pre-union work conditions if unions were abolished? Would it result in underpaid, overworked employees?
